Accused 9/11 plotter Mohammed faces a French trial

PARIS (AP) — The self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks goes on trial in absentia in France on Monday for allegedly ordering a deadly Tunisian synagogue bombing less than a year after the assault on New York and Washington.

The proceedings in Paris are expected to highlight the reach and complexity of al-Qaida-linked networks in North Africa, although they are unlikely to directly affect the fate of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is being held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay.

NEW YORK—For more than a hundred years, generations of New Yorkers, as well as tourists to the city, have made the trek up the spiral staircase to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, to peer through the small windows at the unparalleled view of New York Harbor.

But that iconic experience ended with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. All the national parks were briefly closed, but Liberty Island, the statue's home, remained shut for several months. When the island was reopened to visitors, in December 2001, the statue remained off-limits.

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq — "I was 16 years old when 9/11 happened, and being the hot-blooded person that I am, I joined the Army on my 17th birthday," said Spc. Jontel Watson, a 3rd Platoon, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment combat medic.

"I graduated (from high school) early and went to basic training in 2002."
