9/11 Families Outraged by Obama Call to Suspend Guantánamo War Crimes Trials

At possibly last war crimes hearing at Guantanamo, two acknowledge guilt

Family members of people killed on September 11 and in other terror attacks say they are outraged by President Obama’s draft order calling for the suspension of war crimes trials of prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay.

“To me it’s beyond comprehension that they would take the side of the terrorists,” said Peter Gadiel, whose son, James, was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11. “Many of these people have been released and been right back killing, right back at their terrorist work again.”

Judge freezes 9/11 trial as Obama takes steps on Guantánamo pledge

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVY BASE, Cuba—A military judge on Wednesday ordered a 120-day freeze in the military trial of five men accused of plotting the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks after President Barack Obama told Pentagon prosecutors to seek a delay so his new administration could study what to do about terrorist suspects held at the U.S. detention center here.

Army Col. Stephen Henley halted the 9/11 military commission proceedings at midday, after a Pentagon prosecutor argued at the war court created by President George W. Bush that the trials themselves are the prerogative of new commander in chief.

In Washington, news reports said that the Obama administration was circulating a draft executive order in which the president would order that the prison camps be emptied of prisoners within the year. Advisers have said Obama is likely to sign such an order this week.

Sept. 11 attack co-defendants Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Waleed Bin Attash are seen Monday at the war crimes court at Guantanamo Bay.

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - Two of the five men accused of orchestrating the Sept. 11 attacks offered unapologetic admissions of guilt Monday in a sometimes chaotic — and possibly final — session of the Guantanamo war crimes court.

The hearings, scheduled over several days, could be the last at Guantanamo, since President-elect Barack Obama has said he would close the offshore prison at the U.S. base in Cuba and many expect him to suspend the military tribunals and order new trials in the U.S.

N.J. grapples with teaching 9/11

New Jersey is developing a curriculum focused on the events of Sept. 11, 2001 — including general lessons on terrorism — that will be taught to children as young as kindergarten.

The state Department of Education has enlisted groups of educators, such as those on the state’s Holocaust Commission and at the Liberty Science Center, to devise resource guides and lesson plans for Grades K-12.

The groups are also working with former Gov. Thomas H. Kean and with an organization representing some of the families who lost loved ones on Sept. 11. It is the first statewide effort of its kind in the nation.

Holder Wants Some Detainees Tried in the U.S

WASHINGTON — Eric H. Holder Jr. said Thursday that if confirmed as attorney general under President-elect Barack Obama he would seek to prosecute in American criminal courts some prisoners now held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and would re-examine Bush administration policies he considered legally troubling.

At the same time, Mr. Holder was forced to defend his record as deputy attorney general in the Clinton administration as Republicans pressed him during a daylong confirmation hearing about his role in controversial pardons issued by President Bill Clinton and on other issues.
