The 9/11 Presidency

Long after George W. Bush boards Marine One next Tuesday bound for Texas, the enduring image of his epochal eight years will be the September 20, 2001 evening a relatively new President stood before a nation traumatized and in mourning.

“We will direct every resource at our command—every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence, and every necessary weapon of war—to the disruption and to the defeat of the global terror network,” Mr. Bush told a Joint Session of Congress. “I will not yield; I will not rest; I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security for the American people.”

In that moment, he set the standard for the Bush Presidency: To protect Americans from another 9/11 and hit Islamist terrorists and their sponsors abroad. Whatever history’s ultimate judgment, Mr. Bush never did yield. Nearly all the significant battles of the Bush years—the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, Guantanamo and wiretapping, upheavals in the Middle East, America’s troubles with Europe—stemmed directly from his response to the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon that defined his Presidency.

Bush to highlight ‘unshakable faith’ in America

President Bush in his final prime-time address Thursday night will talk about his faith in the future of America, the war between good and evil and how his successor “reflects the enduring promise of our land.”

In excerpted remarks from Bush’s speech provided by the White House, the president reflects on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, discussing how the attacks changed him and mentioning some of the controversial decisions he made afterward.

“This evening, my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house — September 11, 2001. That morning, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor,” Bush plans to say. “As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11. But I never did. Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation. And I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.”

3 Victims’ Families Ask Judge to Release Trove of Documents on 9/11 Attack

Saying that “the public interest in the aviation security failures on September 11th is beyond dispute,” lawyers for families of two passengers and a flight attendant who were killed in the 9/11 hijackings asked a federal judge on Wednesday to release a trove of secret documents that they said showed how those failures occurred.

“The public ought to know about the breakdowns in aviation security that allowed four commercial planes to become weapons of mass destruction,” the lawyers wrote to Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein of Federal District Court in Manhattan, who has overseen the wrongful-death and injury lawsuits filed after the attacks.

Accused 9/11 plotter Mohammed faces a French trial

PARIS (AP) — The self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks goes on trial in absentia in France on Monday for allegedly ordering a deadly Tunisian synagogue bombing less than a year after the assault on New York and Washington.

The proceedings in Paris are expected to highlight the reach and complexity of al-Qaida-linked networks in North Africa, although they are unlikely to directly affect the fate of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is being held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay.

Lady Liberty and Old Glory

Lady Liberty and Old Glory

NEW YORK—For more than a hundred years, generations of New Yorkers, as well as tourists to the city, have made the trek up the spiral staircase to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, to peer through the small windows at the unparalleled view of New York Harbor.

But that iconic experience ended with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. All the national parks were briefly closed, but Liberty Island, the statue's home, remained shut for several months. When the island was reopened to visitors, in December 2001, the statue remained off-limits.
