Winning Essay

When Barack Obama became president he promised “change” in America. In his inaugural address he said, “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” But what does “change” mean? To me, change is making something different than what it was originally. It means making sacrifices to be successful and to achieve your goals. Change involves taking action to transform what you have into something that has progressed. There have been some good changes in our country since President Barack Obama became president.

One of the most important changes President Obama has made, for the citizens of America, is improving the healthcare system. This issue is so important because many Americans aren’t able to afford healthcare or their coverage was suddenly canceled. All around us, seniors struggle to pay for their prescription, children are denied insurance because they have disabilities, and family members are denied healthcare because of “pre-existing conditions.” President Obama changed all this by passing the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act makes healthcare more affordable as well as hold insurance companies more responsible for their actions. This act permits Americans to have more control as well as freedom over their insurance choices and the result will be an expansion of healthcare coverage. I think that everyone in America should be able to afford healthcare no matter how injured or sick they are.

Another important change President Obama made is preventing foreclosure. Hardworking families are at risk of losing their homes because they cannot keep up with their mortgage payments. What people don’t know is that families are being kicked out on the street almost every 2.4 minutes. There are programs designated to help prevent foreclosure and give assistance to homeowners by modifying their mortgages or granting them the ability to refinance for lower payments. President Obama has created programs such as the Making Home Affordable Modification program that supports loan modifications so borrowers can keep their homes if they are at the risk of foreclosure. I think that these programs are a great idea because it saves many people their homes and the risk of being homeless. Many Americans and families end up in crowded homeless shelters and it is sad to see that happen. Even so, homeless shelters cannot support a family for long and it makes me think what happens next to them?

Unemployment is a big problem in the United States. The economy has been doing poorly in the past few years. This is a topic that most can discuss and relate to. Many Americans lost their jobs and it has been difficult to find jobs in such economy. People live on welfare and food stamps, but that is not going to last. We need jobs to provide food, shelter, and clothing for our families. Fortunately, things are starting to change and head in the right direction. President Obama and his partner, Joe Biden, made changes to increase the employment rate and assistance towards those who are not working. The Obama- Biden plan was made to improve conditions in our economy. The plan provides a temporary tax credit given to companies that increase the amount of employees they hire. It makes immediate investments towards rebuilding roads, bridges, and schools, more job training programs investment in a clean energy economy and much more. Although the economy is still shaky, I believe that President Obama can turn that around.

There is much work to be done to make America rise to the top. People need jobs to raise their families, people need healthcare when they are sick and need treatment and people need to have a place to live to take care of their family. Change will happen consistently because it is change that is going to advance this nation. I chose these three changes to discuss because I believe that President Obama has truly made a difference towards them. As a president, he takes on the full responsibility to make the Unites States as best as possible. He was chosen to lead and represent us as a whole. President Obama is paving the road for future generations. I hope that in the future more changes will come.

Greetings! My name is Chloe Chen and I am truly very happy to be a winner of this essay contest. I am presently an eight grader at Horace Greeley Intermediate School 10, otherwise known as I.s.10Q. I have met many fascinating people from this school and had good memories that I will remember forever. One thing I like about being in I.S.10 is that the teachers motivate their students to reach for their dreams and to never give up even if they had fallen.

I like going to school because it is a place where people share their knowledge and thoughts with one another. I like all the subjects taught in school because each subject contains something fascinating and new to be learnt. My favorite subjects are both English Language Arts and Math. I like English Language Arts because I am able to learn about the life of different authors as well as the works they have contributed towards. From this, I get my inspiration to write about many different topics that interests me. I also like to write poetry because I am able to express my thoughts in figurative language. Math is a subject I enjoy because I like working with numbers and solving algebraic problems. Education is in many ways important. It can even help one make worthy decisions in the future!

In my spare time, I like to dance, play the piano, sing, write, read, and play basketball. I love to listen to music and take pictures of sunsets.

Many have dreams and dreams are vital. People should dream big because it encourages the idea to strive for the best. My dream is to become a doctor or a pharmacist. I want to help save lives. I want to help the suffering because I believe that no one should live in pain. I had taken curiosity to the medical field at a young age. It amazes me how medicine can work wonders on people. I hope one day, certain diseases or illness like cancer can become curable.

My family and teachers have been there for me and without them I probably wouldn’t be here today. I want to thank them for their support and positive energy. They are the ones who tell me to never give up. I also want to thank Al and Maureen Santora who keep the memory of heroism alive. Christopher Santora had given his life to save others showing remarkable bravery and fearlessness. Lastly, I want to thank the judges for choosing my essay as the winning one. I am sincerely grateful.
