Barack Obama: A President for Change

All of us experience change in our lives. Change is the one constant in our lives. There are changes that we look forward to and change that we fear. However, one thing is for sure. Things will not stay the same no matter how much we would like them too. When a life change occurs, we have two choices in how to respond. We can despair that a change has come and assume that things will be worse, or we can look with excitement at the new possibilities that the change presents. President Barack Obama has promised change for this country. He has promised that at the end of his presidency there will be a changed America. I think so far it could be debatable, but I believe he has contributed to some change.

I think there have been changes in our country since Obama became president- some good, some bad. Three good changes that I believe he’s made include taking soldiers out of Iraq, establishing a credit card bill of rights, and health care reform. President Barack Obama has kept his promise about taking the soldiers out of Iraq. On August 20th, 2010, the last of American combat troops left Iraq. However, 50,000 troops still remain in Iraq with a mission of supporting and training Iraqi forces, partnering with Iraqis in counterterrorism missions, and protecting our civilian and military efforts. The present agreement between Iraq and the United States calls for all troops to be out of Iraq by the end of 2011. Another change Obama has made was establishing a credit card bill of rights that cleaned up the credit card industry by ridding "any time, any reason" rate increases and no more confusing contracts. A third change Obama made was reforming health care by making a “universal” health care bill that mandated healthcare for every American. Although there are some good features of the new health care bill such as closing up the Donut Hole to make prescription medicine more affordable and the non-denial of health insurance to people with pre-existing conditions, some will argue that the bill is just too expensive and it does not address all of the problems with our existing health care policies (mainly Republicans who are currently trying to repeal it).

During his campaign, Barack Obama made many promises for change. Slowly, step by step, he is contributing to change in American society. As mentioned previously, change can be a replacement for something in a good way or a bad way. Three changes Barack Obama has made were pulling soldiers out of Iraq, establishing a credit card bill of rights, and health care reform. When a change occurs, we can assume that things will be worse, or we can look with excitement at the new possibilities that the change presents. President Barack Obama is working hard to make a changed America and promised that by the end of his presidency there will be. The only question remains: will he be able to keep these promises?

My name is Edwin De Jesus and I am a fourteen year old student at I.S.141 in Queens. I enjoy playing video games with my friends, baseball, filmmaking, going to the park, and using my computer. From my computer and PlayStation 3, I am able to chat with people from different states as well as different countries such as England, Ireland, and Australia. I like to use Skype, go on Facebook, and watch YouTube videos. I also enjoy making YouTube videos myself such as tutorials or goofy ones with my friends. I love to film and add effects with computer software. I have decided to pursue a career as a Film Director and Screenplay Writer.

On a normal day, I play basketball with my friends after school, go home and play some video games, do homework, and then watch my favorite shows. Sometimes on weekends I go bowling, to the movies, play pool, walk around, go to Hooters, ice skating, or skiing. However, I’m still learning the basics of skiing. In the summer, I play baseball at ICYP and I made the All Stars last year.

The only instrument that I could play so far is the trumpet. I’ve only been playing for two years but I’m pretty good at it. I don’t have much performing talents such as singing or dancing but I am very advanced at the computer. Sometimes on the computer, I like writing stories. However, when it comes to art, I have very poor drawings.

If I had to narrow down my favorites, I’d choose horror as my favorite movie genre, punk as my favorite music genre, baseball as my favorite sport, mathematics as my favorite subject, the Mets as my favorite baseball team, the Jets as my favorite football team, and Warriors: Into the Wild by Eric Hunter as my favorite book.
