In America all citizens are given the right to vote. We make basic decisions throughout the country by majority rule. As a future voter, I believe it is completely necessary for politicians to see both sides of an argument. Today there are lobbyists who usually work for certain interest groups and try to persuade legislators on behalf of their persona interest. A politician could be looking at an issue from a different point of view, which can negatively impact a community, but a lobbyist can come around and inspire the politician. lobbyists can change a legislators opinion in a good way or a bad way.

I my opinion, Lobbyists should always be allowed access to elected officials. A simple conversation can change the way the whole country lives for the next few years. Al thought lobbyists do not always get the deal they are looking for, there is usually a compromise made that benefits everyone. Lobbyists have a great function in our country’s democracy. Lobbyists can support the public by directly talking to politicians from the public’s point of view. For example, the organization Greenpeace uses lobbying as one of their methods. This international environmental interest group focuses on issues such as global warming, bottom trawling, ancient forest destruction, and nuclear power. When new legislation might exploit nature’s ways, this interest group sends lobbyists to influence elected politician. Lobbyists have to persuade politicians by showing how their interest benefits the majority. Most lobbying is lawful, but at times lobbying can take a dark turn and what is done is illegal. Besides interest groups who benefit our community, there are also lobbyists which speak on behalf of their personal financial interest such as lobbying firms which support large or small companies which do not consider anything but their financial benefit. There are lobby groups which work for companies such as Exxon Mobil. To get a politician on their side of the argument, their lobbyists may bribe or even blackmail the elected official.

Lobbyists are allowed and I believe should continue to be able to persuade elected politician and the legislature. Lobbyists have a chance to change politicians’ mind in a good way. As a future voter, I would be happy to see lobbyists doing their jobs. I might consider helping a lobby group some day and in that way influence the government.

My name is Gabriela Campoverde and I am fourteen years old. I was born in New York City on May 23, 1993 and have grown up to be a city gal. My family first came to America twenty-six years ago from Ecuador. This following school year, I will be attending Townsend Harris High School.

Since I was young my family has taught me that education was one of the most important things in life and by studying hard you can become anything your heart desires in the near future. I came to the realization that the harder I worked, the easier it would be to pursue my dream of actually doing something important with my life. When I was little I heard a wise quote by Mahatma Gandhi that motivated me to get the best out of my education as possible:

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow.
Learn as if you were to live forever.”

Today that famous quote lives in my heart and reminds me that learning new things can give you a special kind of immortality.

On my spare time I enjoy arts and crafts such as crocheting, painting, and sketching objects around the house. I also love to make new things to decorate my room with. I spend most of my time with my Yorkshire Terrier, Jamie. He’s taught me how to care for someone since I’m an only child. I love him and treat him like a doll. I love to design clothing for my dog and his friends. During the winter he walks around with clothing especially made for him by me.

I would like to attend Parson’s School of Design after I graduate high school. When I grow up, I would like to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion designer. Ever since I was small I remember designing clothing for anybody that walked through my front door. I was constantly creating new clothing for my Barbie dolls. I would certainly enjoy being part of the fashion world one day. Like Christopher Santora, I hope to choose a career that I enjoy doing no matter how much the salary or how much the struggle. I look upon Christopher Santora and honor him because he became one of the few that accomplished what he always wanted to do.

I would never have gotten to where I am today without the help of my family and friends and I thank them dearly. I would also like to thank the Santoras for funding a scholarship to help students like me get one step closer to accomplishing our dreams.
