As a fifth grader living in the United States of America, I was able to be part of history in the making when President Obama was elected. Barack Obama is the first African American president to ever hold presidential office in America. I never paid much attention to politics or what was going on in the government. However, since Obama decided to run for office, I couldn’t help but hear about and have some understanding on politics. The country hasn’t been doing too well and I have heard the word recession used a lot to describe the country. The United States of America needs someone to help them out of this recession and that is why so many Americans were so much more involved.

Before President Obama was elected, there was a lot of concern over the troops in Iraq. Former President Bush was set on keeping the troops there until they finished what was started. However, many people didn’t agree with this decision. Therefore, they were looking for a leader like Obama that would listen to their opinions and take some action. Obama has already made some decisions including removing some troops from Iraq, bringing some home, and reassigning some to Afghanistan.

In addition, Americans were energized over this election because they are hoping that Obama will bring “Peace in the Middle East”. There has been a lot of tension between countries in the Middle East and America ever since September 11. Obama wants to restore American’s relationship with all foreign countries. He is gaining support from Muslims and is uniting the people of America.

Many Americans have become involved in the past election because it affected them personally with their jobs. The unemployment rate has increased greatly over the past few years and the rate has been the highest since the Great Depression. People were looking for some help and support and they found it in President Obama. He created a plan to bring money back into the economy, to create more jobs, and most importantly to provide hope for the American people.

American citizens also looked to President Obama for help involving health care and benefits. Many Americans are uninsured and can’t afford to get sick. The health care system contains some flaws and things need to be done to improve it. Obama is trying to make it more affordable and with help from Vice President Joe Biden, they plan to lower health care costs by $2,500 for a typical American family. They are planning to build on the current health care system and improve it so Americans don’t have to worry about whether or not they can go to the doctor when they are sick.

In conclusion, Americans have become so energized over this election because of President’s Obama intentions to reform America for the better. He gives us hope and makes us believe that change will come. He helps us understand that we have duties and responsibilities as citizens of America and the only way to bring change, is to accept them. Like Obama said, “I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring change in Washington…I’m asking you to believe in yours.”

My name is Jordan Oliva and I am currently a 5th grade student at PS 122. I love to play baseball and other sports. I am also in the school band and play Alto Saxophone.

I am not too sure what I want to do when I get older but I have some time to figure it out. I would like to take the opportunity to thank my Mom and Dad and all my family for their love and support all these years. I would also like to thank my teacher Mrs. Ferrera for being so great. My biggest thanks goes to the Santora family for giving me this opportunity and letting me be a part of this wonderful cause. The biggest thanks goes to Firefighter Christopher Santora who sacrificed his life on Sept 11th to save the lives of so many. He is truly a hero.
