Change in America

Barak Obama was elected to be President of the United States in 2008. This had a great affect on America because he was the first African-American president. During the election President Obama promised that he was going to make many changes. I think that change means to make a difference. Change can have both negative and positive affects. I believe that Obama has made positive changes in America. Two major changes he made were one, getting rid of the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy in the military, and two, creating a bill that gives health care to everyone in America.

I think that the ban of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was a very important change in the Unites States’ military. The military said that gay people could not be in the army but because they wanted volunteers they created this policy of not asking and not telling. That way, homosexuals could be in the army but without telling people they were gay. This was wrong because everyone deserves the right to be who they are, without having to hide it. Obama made a new policy saying that gays could openly fight in the military. This gives gay people a right that they deserve, and may also cause more gay people to want to fight in the army to support our country.

The other change that I found very important was Obama’s new healthcare bill. Many people in America are not given proper medical care, and many can not afford it.

Obama’s new healthcare plan made it so that all people in the U.S. have better medical plans that they can afford. This was a good change because if people did not have medical care they may become ill and possibly die. Now no one goes without proper medical treatment.

As president, Barack Obama has made many changes. These changes include his healthcare bill and allowing gays to fight openly in the military. There are many other changes he’s made too, such as bringing home troops from Iraq. Obama has definitely made a difference since he was elected. Step by step, Barack Obama has made positive changes in our nation, and I think that so far, he has been a great president.

My name is Katerina Bell, and I am a fifth grade student at P.S. 122 in Queens, NY. I have lived in Queens all of my life with my fun older sister, my smart older brother, and my loving parents. I am half Greek and half German, Irish, and Slovak. My family is as exotic as my heritage. I consider myself very lucky to have such a supportive family and attend such a great school. I have learned so much and have made so many friends. I am always visiting my family in Michigan who I love very much. When I am not enjoying family dinners and movie nights, I am hanging out with my best friends. We are always listening to music and telling funny stories. I love writing and expressing myself through art. I used to cheerlead and I even played soccer. However, my favorite thing to do in the world is dance. I dance ballet, jazz, and modern but my favorite style is ballet. I have taken dance classes since I was very little but I prefer to just dance alone in my room. Dancing helps me clear my mind and put any anger I have into something good. When I was little my brother and sister used to pick on me because I was a dancer and they were both soccer players. Everyone thought I would want to play soccer too, but I always loved dance. My family is always front row at all my recitals and shows. When I’m older I would like to open a dance company and set up classes for young girls just like me. Everyone should have a way to express themselves.
