In this world, there are many types of government to choose from. Two examples are monarchy and dictatorship. The Founding Fathers of The United States of America, however, formed a new government system. It is called democracy.

In my eyes, a democracy is a government system based on the belief that all people, no matter what religion, race, nationality, gender, or skin color, are created equally. It means that everybody can speak their opinion on how they should be lead, and other issues too.

Citizens of democratic countries have certain responsibilities. One of them is to obey all laws of the area they live in. Another responsibility is that citizens must respect others no matter how different they may be. Also, citizens have the option to vote for their leaders.

I am very, very, very proud to be a citizen of The United States. I really like the idea of everyone having a voice. I also favor the diversity of the citizens. It is nice to meet people from all around the world. I feel America is an incredible place to make a living and achieve your dreams. This country might be the best on earth.

Obviously a democratic country is the best choice of all.

My name is Matthew Louis Roca. I was born in New York on May 16, 1994. I am 11 years old. I am currently the Student Council President of P.S.2. I will be starting Junior High School soon and have been taking entrance exams to several. I have already received notice from two and I have lots of tough choices to make over the summer. I learned the alphabet before I could speak, then mom taught me to read. I always had books around me and I always found something interesting in all of them. The library was my playground. I remember the day my dad took me to the library to get my very first library card, I was to proud to sign my name on it. I was maybe 4 years old. The spoken and written word is to me the ultimate art form. Words are the key to peace on our planet, in our communities, schools, and in our interactions with others.

I have lots of dreams and goals. My dreams mostly have to do with helping others and urging others to do the right thing always. At home I am taught to always do the right thing, to be kind, considerate and responsible. My goals are to always do the best that I can. Even if I stumble a little bit, I can work hard and be an asset to my community. I would like to be a lawyer or a doctor. I may even be a researcher and find the cure for illnesses that are yet to be abolished. Most of all I want to find the cure for other illnesses that plague the world and have many innocent victims: hate, intolerance, injustice, hunger, fear and conflict.

I am very proud to be this year’s winner of the Firefighter Christopher Santora Educational Scholarship. It is a great honor to receive an award named for a true hero. I cannot believe it. But I promise that I will never forget this day, and I will keep Christopher Santora’s name alive through my actions and remember him in everything I accomplish. I think that he’ll be my guardian angel forever and his job and purpose on this earth will continue. Thank you for this incredible honor.
