Winning Essay

As stated by Winston Churchill to show the world how simple words have strong meanings, “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” Although “justice for all” is perhaps, three simple, small words, those three, simple, small words have a big and powerful meaning. Having “justice for all” means respecting civil rights in the eyes of the law, and upholding civil rights for all of mankind. In law, “justice for all” may revolve around sending someone to prison for consequences for their actions, or paying a fine for some physical damages from an impact from an accident. For mankind, “justice for all” revolves around treating people the way you would like to be treated, and having people being equally treated no matter what color skin they are, and what sexuality they are. This is justice for all.

When thinking about “justice for all”, I immediately think about respecting civil rights in the eyes of the law. In court cases against murder, rape, fraud, and/or theft the victims deserve justice. To be more specific, in rape court cases, the victim needs justice, and wants the suspect (and/or the actual person who committed the rape), to face the consequences. Thus, justice would be rightfully served for the victim, because the person who raped him/her, is finally facing the consequences of his/her actions. Secondly, when two people are involved in a car accident, and a physical accident that damages their physical body and appearance, justice is served once the people are given the fine that the other person gives. Adding on, when being in a car accident, “car A” hits “car B”, and “car B” has a broken bumper; the owner of “car A” must pay a fine to pay for all the damages. This is justice because having someone pay for what has happened. To conclude, when thinking about “justice for all”, I immediately think about respecting civil rights in the eyes of the law.

When thinking about “justice for all”, I also think about upholding civil rights for mankind. When people walk the streets of the United States of America, they get looks because of what color skin they have, and are treated differently. Once those looks disappear, and people are treated the same because of what color skin they have, justice would be served. Females who are attracted to females, and males that are attracted to males, and etc., are teased and looked at in a disgusted way because of who they are attracted to; because they are attracted to the same sex. Justice will be served for those people once they are accepted by society. To conclude this paragraph, when thinking about “justice for all”, I also think about upholding civil rights for mankind.

In conclusion, having “justice for all” means respecting civil rights in the eyes of the law, and upholding civil rights for all of mankind. Justice would be rightfully served for the victim, because the person who raped him/her, is finally facing the consequences of his/her actions. Justice is served once the people are given the fine that the other person gives. Justice will be served for those people who are treated differently because of who they are attracted to, and of what their skin color is, and once they are accepted by society. As stated by Lois McMaster Bujold, “The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them.”

Biography

We would like to wish Paraskevi Skordas the best of luck moving on to Academy of American Studies. Congratulations!

My name is Paraskevi Skordas, I am 13 years old, and I live in Astoria, New York. I was born on August 30, 2001, into a very big family with lots of first and second cousins, multiple aunts and uncles, and many relatives. I have two siblings, making me one of three children. My sister Eleni, and my brother Nikolaos, are twins. My mother’s name is Maria, and my father’s name is Demetrios. My mother is a stay-home mom, and my father is a Retired Highway Patrol Officer, who was a first responder to the attacks of 9/11/01. My entire family supports me in every way they can, they encourage me to be myself, and to try my best in everything I do. My family and I are extremely close, and love to hang out together. I really enjoy when I get to experience quality time with my family, because to me, family is the most important thing in someone’s life. They support you, encourage you, and love you for who you are. I am very thankful for such a wonderful, crazy, and loving family.

In my 13 years of living, I make time to find my true self. I can admit that I am no longer the person I was in 3rd grade; I am someone better. I now know my priorities and my responsibilities. School can be very difficult but I really work hard and feel accomplished when I get high grades. I enjoy listening to music every day, especially 80’s music and music from One Direction. The music I listen to inspires me in many ways. They have many meanings about today’s life. I enjoy taking pictures of things that interest me. I own two professional cameras at the moment. I own the Samsung NX 1,000 and the Canon Rebel T3i. These cameras allow me to express my personality and thoughts through photographs. Reading is very important to me. I really love to read books from the Romance genre. When I read books connecting with love, I also connect with the characters to feel every inch of emotions that they feel in a certain chapter or scene. I really enjoy going out with my friends and having long phone calls with them. Being able to communicate and hang out with my friends allows me to have some free time and allows me to be myself around those close to me. Next year, I am attending Academy of American Studies. I was very excited to find out it’s the High School I’ll be attending in September. I cried tears of joy when the acceptance letter came in.  AAS will help me become who I want to be in the future.

Overall, I’m just a 13 year old girl who loves to be with her family, read, study, shop, watch romantic movies, complete projects, be sarcastic, and loves to be herself. I am my own person, and I strive to be the best daughter, student, friend and human.
